As a young man approaches the beginning of his adult years, he encounters many difficult challenges in a short period of time. Pressures to fit in during adolescence give way to an often confusing journey of finding one’s unique place in the world. Priorities shift from getting into college, to achieving academic success, to ultimately gaining employment and financial independence. This stage in life is complicated further by the natural physical and psychological development of one’s late teen years. The transition into adulthood can truly be a difficult time for even the most well-adjusted young men.
Those struggling with mental health issues face all these challenges while trying to maintain emotional stability, a struggle difficult enough without the seemingly countless pressures put on young adults today.
At Waypointe, we offer emerging adult men (ages 18 to 26) with mental health conditions and co-occurring disorders a place to stop, take a deep breath, and re-evaluate their lives. We help them understand how they can leave the past behind and focus on a bright future. We teach them that their past mistakes and struggles don’t have to be an indicator of their future but rather a starting point for transitioning into a new and exciting phase of life that can bring independence, healthy living, and personal responsibility and productivity.
Who We Are
Waypointe is a residential treatment and transitional program. After getting to know each participant, our treatment team crafts a comprehensive and highly individualized plan that includes mental health treatment; educational and vocational guidance; psychosocial integration; and health, nutrition and wellness counseling.
At Waypointe, these crucial domains are addressed by a cohesive team of professionals. We achieve optimal success and outcomes by addressing all domains simultaneously with coordination of care throughout. Our Psychiatric Medical Director and licensed clincians work towards the same ultimate goal as our vocational specialists and residential mentors. As each participant transitions from one phase of the program to the next, they get closer to their objective of independent adulthood.
How We Facilitate Transition
Mental health conditions and, co-occurring disorders can make the transition into adulthood especially challenging. Waypointe teaches participants to transition from their old way of life rather than focus entirely on change, because we know learning how to make transitions is a lifelong skill. Once learned, this skill is invaluable in navigating all the different phases life brings.
Primary goals for our clients include emotional wellbeing, social engagement, and personal productivity. We achieve these goals by assisting them in learning how to make healthy lifestyle choices; teaching them social skills they may need to actively engage with co-workers, peers, family and friends; and helping them take steps towards being productive members of society.
Our L.I.G.H.T. Program
Our approach utilizes evidence-based practices (EBPs) backed by scientific evidence along with recognized models of learning, change, and transition. We call this approach L.I.G.H.T.—Learning Individualized Guidelines for Healthy Transitions. Waypointe’s L.I.G.H.T. program takes participants through a series of steps to let go of the past, embrace the future, and with support and preparation, welcome a new beginning.
Phases of transformation include exploring new roles, relationships, and actions; planning a new course; discovering the knowledge and skills needed to implement a plan; building competence and self-confidence; and reintegrating with a brand new perspective.
Our staff is with these young adults and their families every step of the way through this process of transitioning from living at home or being at an inpatient facility to re-engaging with society and becoming productive, healthy young men moving towards a successful future.
